Join the Delmar American Legion in honoring George H. Lenhardt on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

George H. Lenhardt (1947-2018)

George enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Sergeant E5 from April 17, 1970 to October 1, 1971.

He supervised the US Army Communications Center and operated cryptographic equipment and communication channels. George processed communication for Secretary of State Melvin Laird, General Westmoreland and Abrams, and all members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He held Top Secret clearance in the US Army Special Security Group while working for the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence. 

George received numerous awards including the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Metal, National Defense Service Medal, and 2 Overseas Service Bars. 

When he came home, he returned to work at the New York Telephone Company and utilized his engineering and computer skills. After an early retirement, he worked for the NY Power Authority. He was extremely active in his community and served as an active Firefighter for over 50 years. 

George served as Deputy Town Supervisor in Bethlehem from 1998 to 2003 and was a Town of Bethlehem Councilman from 1994 to 2005, and filled a one-year vacancy in 2013. 

George was married to his wife, Lynne for over 45 years and was a great father to his son and daughter.
