Bethlehem Police Department Introduces Carter Kits During Autism Awareness Month
Bethlehem, NY — April 22, 2026 — In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the Bethlehem Police Department has begun deploying Carter Kits sensory bags to better support individuals on the autism spectrum and others who may experience sensory overload or distress during emergency situations.
The initiative was inspired by a recent effort from the Slingerlands Fire Department, whose use of the kits highlighted their value in first response settings. Carter Kits are portable sensory bags that include clinically supported items designed to help calm, focus, and comfort individuals during stressful or overwhelming encounters.
The Bethlehem Police Department has initially purchased two kits, which will be utilized by School Resource Officers as part of their daily responsibilities. The department plans to expand the program in the coming months by equipping additional patrol vehicles as funding allows.
Chief Gina Cocchiara noted that the addition of Carter Kits reflects the department’s continued commitment to thoughtful, community-focused policing and ensuring officers are equipped to effectively serve all members of the community.
Members of the Bethlehem Police Department command staff and School Resource Officers were joined by representatives from the Slingerlands Fire Department and local officials for a photo opportunity highlighting the new equipment.
