The following is an important message from the Bethlehem Police Department...the first day of school at BCSD is Thursday, Sept. 5!

It's that time of year again - BACK TO SCHOOL!! As the new school year brings excitement to the eyes of students, teachers and parents; it also brings additional traffic in and around all schools. We also see a large increase in students walking and bicycling to and from school. The Bethlehem Police Department reminds motorists to be aware of this traffic and drive with care in and around schools. As part of our safety initiatives, the Bethlehem Police Department will have extra patrols in and around the schools, as well as following school buses during the first few weeks of school to ensure safety and enforce the vehicle and traffic law. We ask that bicycle and pedestrians continue to follow the "See and Be Seen" philosophy, and we ask motorists to look out for all users of the roadways.

We ask parents and students driving to school to be cognizant when driving through residential neighborhoods to and from school, as we often see an increase in speeding in these areas. Motorists and pedestrians should also be alert for School Crossing Guards. The Police Department also asks that all people driving to school observe all appropriate parking laws as it pertains to the school they are at. These laws are passed and enforced to ensure the safety of everyone, and most importantly our students and children.

We ask that everyone do their part by following the vehicle and traffic laws, especially in the area of schools, and buses. Let's have a safe and great school year!
